Large Study Finds No Link Between Rotavirus Vaccine and Type 1 Diabetes Risk

Why Researchers Studied This Question

Scientists have long suspected that infections in early childhood might influence whether a child develops type 1 diabetes. Because rotavirus is a common infection in infants, researchers wondered whether vaccinating against rotavirus might also reduce type 1 diabetes risk. Previous studies on this question produced mixed results, leaving the question unanswered.

How the Study Was Conducted

Norwegian researchers used a natural experiment: when Norway introduced the rotavirus vaccine program in September 2014, it gave scientists an opportunity to compare type 1 diabetes rates in children born before versus after the vaccine became available. The team followed nearly 740,000 children born between 2007 and 2019, tracking whether they developed type 1 diabetes between ages 6 months and 5 years. By 2019, 846 of these children had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

What the Results Showed

When comparing children born before versus after rotavirus vaccination was introduced, researchers initially found a small increase in type 1 diabetes cases. However, when they excluded the transition years (2013–2015) to account for potential herd immunity effects, this increase disappeared and was no longer meaningful.

In a second analysis comparing fully vaccinated children with unvaccinated children, there was no significant difference in type 1 diabetes risk between the two groups.

What This Means

This large population-based study found no evidence that rotavirus vaccination either protects against type 1 diabetes or increases its risk. While the rotavirus vaccine remains important for preventing severe rotavirus infection in infants, parents and patients should not expect it to prevent type 1 diabetes. The findings also reassure families that the vaccine does not raise type 1 diabetes risk.
